I haven't been back to Max and Phyllis' house since it was sold. Not because I don't miss it, but because I don't want to see it changed. And I think the place I'm most concerned about is The Magic Place. To the new owners, it's probably just steps leading nowhere, up a backyard hill in the middle of the high desert. But for me, it is alive with memories of Grandpa working, Grandma whistling, and me waiting for her fried chicken dinner to be ready.
The Magic Place at 35701 wasn't the first Magic Place, or the only Magic Place. Older grandkids remember a set of steps further up the hill, and the Newhall House has secret prints of its own. Of all the treasures Max and Phyllis left behind (besides, perhaps, a certain very important eraser), Cathey's footprints were the most important, moving with the family from Pacoima, to Newhall, to Agua Dulce, and finally for now, to San Diego.
So this Magic Place is just the latest site for Petersons to leave their mark. Send me your email addess, and I will add you as a blog author. Everyone is invited to post a message and share a photo, or if you like, to just sit and see.
